Here are a few things that have made me smile lately:
* Waking up on a 38 degree morning to a quiet house and realizing I don't have to get out of bed for anything.
* Finally getting out of bed and finding soothing hot water in the shower and hot coffee or tea in the coffee maker :)
* Spending moments watching the young squirrels calculate the distance between our barbeque grill and the window bird feeder. . .and jump for it. Outright laughter comes when they miss and they land frustrated on the grass below the window only to try again 10 seconds later.
* Phone calls. Lengthy phone calls. The kind you get from friends, not telemarketers :)
* Certain e-mail messages :)
* Watching my daughter get so wrapped up in writing a story out of her own imagination that she stays after school to have her teachers proof/critique it, writes sections of it daily before school and before going to bed at night, and won't show it to me until it's completed :)
* Seeing baby dog Cassie beg shamelessly for dinner scraps with a face that's extremely hard to resist, then actually sigh and give up in favor of going to lie curled up in front of the fire.
* Realizing that last night's West Wing episode was captured in it's entirety on my VHS recorder for the first time in weeks. Commercial free too :)
* Late night channel surfing and catching unexpected clips from Melissa Etheridge's "Live and Alone" DVD on the Ovation network and from John Mayer's "Any Given Thursday" DVD on VH1. :)
* Fresh strawberries for breakfast and fresh sourdough - okay, faux sourdough, not Boudin - for lunch.
* Stepping out the back door and seeing the horizon by the light of a bazillion stars in a midnight black sky.
Tell me what has made you smile lately?
